 SILDENAFIL-ORAL (VIAGRA)

USES:  This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction.  (ED.)

HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: This drug is taken by mouth as needed between Four hours and one-half hour before sexual activity (about one hour before is most effective).Take only as directed. Usually once daily as needed. Sildenafil works along with sexual stimulation to help achieve an erection.

 

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, flushing, stomach upset, nasal stuffiness, diarrhea and dizziness might occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Unlikely but report promptly any pain or other urination problem or skin rash. Very unlikely but report any chest pain, fainting or foot/ankle swelling. If you experience a painful or prolonged erection; (lasting longer than 4 hours) stop using this drug and seek immediate medical attention. If you notice other effects not listed above. Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

 

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, let your doctor know your medical history, including any allergies (especially drug allergies), any penis conditions such as fibrosis/scarring (e.g., Peyronie's disease), history of painful/prolonged erection (priapism), sickle cell anemia, blood system cancer (such as leukemia or mycloma), eye problems (retina diseases), kidney or liver disease, bleeding disorders or active stomach ulcers, heart disease, stroke, or severe high or low blood pressure. Limit alcohol intake, as it may aggravate side effects of this drug. Since this drug may cause dizziness, caution is advised when performing tasks requiring alertness (e.g., driving). To avoid dizziness and light-headedness when rising from seated or lying position, get up slowly. This drug is not to be used in women or children. The elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug; therefore caution is advised in this group. If your doctor has advised you against sexual activity, you should not take Sildenafil. If you had a recent (past 6 months) stroke, heart attack, irregular heartbeat (Arrhythmia) or bleeding stomach ulcers, you should not take Sildenafil.

 

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially any nitrate medications, (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate), nitroprusside (any “nitric oxide donor” medicines), cimetidine, erythromycin, azole anti-fungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), mibefradil, rifamycins (e.g., rifampin), high blood pressure medicines or certain HIV protease inhibitors (such as saquinavir, ritonavir, amprenavir). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Sildenafil used with high blood pressure medication may cause hypertension (low blood pressure) and dizziness.

 

NOTES: Do not share this medication with others, since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug. Use of this drug does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B, and Gonorrhea). With concurrent use of protease inhibitors (saquinavir, ritonavir, amprenavir) the recommended dose of Sildenafil is 25mgs. in a 24 hour period. With concurrent use of erythromycin, rifampin, tagamet ,cimetidine, anti fungal drugs (ketoconazole, iraconazole) and any medical condition such as kidney or liver failure; Kidney (Renal) and Liver (Hepatic) insufficiency, a low dose (25mg in 24 hours) is recommended.

 

MISSED DOSE: Not applicable.

 TADALAFIL-ORAL (CIALIS)

USES:  This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction.  (ED.)  Cialis is a treatment that works fast and can work up to 36 hours.

HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: CIALIS may be taken up to once per day by most patients. Sexual stimulation is required for CIALIS to work. There is no need to plan around meals or avoid high-fat foods because the absorption of CIALIS is not affected by food. You can eat and drink like you normally do, but do not drink alcohol in excess when taking CIALIS (for example, 5 glasses of wine or 5 shots of whiskey). This combination may increase your chances of getting dizzy or lowering your blood pressure.

 

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effects with CIALIS are headache, upset stomach, back pain, and muscle aches. These side effects usually go away after a few hours. Patients who get back pain and muscle aches usually get it 12 to 24 hours after taking CIALIS. Back pain and muscle aches go away by themselves within 48 hours. Call you doctor or other healthcare professional if side effects continue to bother you. Although a rare occurrence, men who experience an erection lasting 4 hours (priapism) should seek immediate medical attention.

 

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug discuss your medical conditions and medications with your doctor to ensure CIALIS is right for you and that you are healthy enough for sexual activity.  CIALIS does not protect a man or his partner from sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially any nitrate medications, including nitroglycerin that is found in tablets, sprays, ointments, pastes or patches. Some recreational drugs called “poppers” also contain nitrates, such as amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate. Also medicines called alpha blockers, (e.g hytrin, cardura, minipress or urozatral, etc), Ritonavir (Norvil®) or indinavir (Crizivan®), Ketoconazole or itraconazole (such as Nizoral® or Sporanox®, Erythromycin) do not interact well with CIALIS and therefore you should not use these medications. Don’t drink alcohol in excess (to a level of intoxication) with CIALIS. Always check with your doctor before starting or stopping any medicines.

 

NOTES: Do not share this medication with others, since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug.  If you take nitrates, often used for chest pain (also known as angina), or alpha-blockers (other than Flomax 0.4mg once daily), prescribed for prostate problem or high blood pressure, DO NOT TAKE CIALIS.

 

VARDENAFIL HCI-ORAL (LEVITRA)

USES: This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction.  (ED.)

LEVITRA has been shown to be effective in men over the age of 18 years who have ED, including men with diabetes or who have undergone prostatectomy.

 

HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: This medication is to be taken by mouth as needed 1 hour (60 minutes) before sexual activity.  Some form of sexual stimulation is needed for an erection to happen with LEVITRA. LEVITRA may be taken with or without meals. Take LEVITRA no more than once a day.

 

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effects with LEVITRA are headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, indigestion, upset stomach, or dizziness. These side effects usually go away after a few hours. Call your doctor if you get a side effect that bothers you or one that will not go away. LEVITRA may uncommonly cause an erection that won’t go away (priapism) or vision changes, such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or having difficulty telling the difference between blue or green. If you get an erection lasting more than four (4) hours, seek medical attention right away.

NOTES: Do not share this medication with others, since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug. DO NOT TAKE LEVITRA if you take any medications called “nitrates”; use recreational drugs called “poppers” like amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate; take medications called “alpha blockers”.
